1. Applying Behavioral Science to Increase the Uptake of Routine Immunization in Children in Addis Ababa

The study will utilize the human centered design (HCD) approach and learnings from the field of Behavioral Science to identify major barriers and levers to uptake of immunization, develop interventions based on the prioritized behaviors from through a human-centered design (HCD) approach that puts the users at the center of innovation and designs for their needs   and  then test  potential impact of the designed interventions to stimulating behavior change aimed at improving immunization coverage, preventing diseases, addressing health inequalities, strengthening healthcare systems, and guiding evidence-based decision-making.

2. Behavioral Surveillance System (BSS) Establishment

The mission of the behavioral surveillance system (BSS) is to systematically collect, monitor, and assess behavioral patterns, trends, and risk factors of individuals and groups to understand how these behaviors affect health and well-being.

At BSS, we recognize the vital role that behavioral data plays in shaping public health interventions, programs, and policies. The data we collect serves as a valuable resource for designing evidence-based strategies that promote health and effectively prevent the onset of diseases and adverse health outcomes.

Through our rigorous surveillance methods, we gather data on a wide range of behaviors that influence health, including lifestyle choices, substance use, sexual practices, dietary habits, physical activity levels, and more. By tracking these behaviors over time, we can identify patterns and trends, enabling us to identify emerging health risks and prioritize areas of intervention.

The insights derived from our surveillance can guide the development and implementation of targeted interventions and will also contribute to the evidence base that drives effective interventions and policies, ultimately improving health outcomes for individuals and communities.

With BUSARA

BIRD-Lab Collaborates with BUSARA center for Behavioral Economics in the project titled Developing behavioral solutions to improve MMS adherence, ANC visits and maternal diet in Ethiopia. Through this collaboration, we will engage in various areas of cooperation to transfer capacity and knowledge. Working together, we will co-run workshops, develop instruments and methods for interventions, perform data analysis, write comprehensive reports, and share valuable insights.

The aim of this collaboration is to transfer capacity and empower the BIRD-Lab team by leveraging Busara’s extensive experience in applying behavioral science to address real-world challenges faced by the global south. By partnering with Busara, we will acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience relevant for applying behavioral science and approaches to our program development initiatives.
