Organizational Background & Project Description
The Behavioral Insight Research and Design (BIRD) Lab is hosted at Addis Ababa University, School of Public Health. BIRD Lab and works in partnership with UNICEF and national stakeholders to generate behavioral evidence that informs policy and programme design.
BIRD Lab is planning to conduct a qualitative study titled: “Perception Survey on Education of Girls and Children with Disabilities in Gambela, Oromia, and Tigray Regional States of Ethiopia.”
The study aims to explore perceptions, attitudes, and contextual barriers affecting access to and participation in education for girls and children with disabilities. Qualitative data will be collected from key stakeholders, including school principals, teachers, gender focal persons, parent–teacher and student associations, and women’s group representatives.
Job Summary and Key Responsibilities
The Qualitative Data Collectors will be expected to:
Participate in training workshop on qualitative data collection tools, procedures, and ethical research standards, to be conducted in Addis Ababa.
Obtain informed consent from all selected participants prior to data collection.
Conduct focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews (IDIs), and key informant interviews (KIIs) in a professional, ethical, and culturally sensitive manner.
Accurately audio-record interviews and discussions and take detailed field notes.
Complete structured checklists and session summaries for each data collection activity.
Ensure completeness, accuracy, quality, and confidentiality of all collected qualitative data.
Submit daily summaries and audio recordings on the day of data collection.
Coordinate closely with the BIRD Lab School of Public Health research team throughout fieldwork.
Transcribe and translate qualitative interview data directly into English with clarity and precision.
Submit all transcriptions and translations within the agreed timeline.
Adhere strictly to ethical standards, safeguarding principles, and project guidelines.
Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to field conditions to support timely completion of the assignment.

Required Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Education, or a related discipline.
At least two years of experience in qualitative data collection.
Demonstrated experience conducting FGDs, IDIs, and KIIs.
Proven skills in transcription and translation of qualitative data into English.
Strong understanding of research ethics and participant protection.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills.
Strong probing, listening, and note-taking abilities.
Good organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and meet strict deadlines in field settings.
