Organizational Background
The Behavioral Insight Research and Design (BIRD) Lab is hosted at Addis Ababa University, School of Public Health. BIRD Lab and works in partnership with UNICEF and national stakeholders to generate behavioral evidence that informs policy and programme design.
With support from UNICEF, BIRD Lab is planning to conduct a Behavioral Insight Study on Community Engagement and School Ownership for Improving Learning Outcomes, Designing Strategies, and School Improvement Planning/Visioning. The study will be implemented in six primary schools located in South Ethiopia and Southwest Ethiopia Peoples’ Regions:
Addis Gaberie Primary School (Segen Zuria Woreda, Konso Zone)
Kerkele Primary School (Bena Tsemay Woreda, South Omo Zone)
Mermerte Primary School (Dasenech Woreda, South Omo Zone)
Kuraz Primary School (Dasenech Woreda, South Omo Zone)
Genet Era Primary School (Menit Shasha Woreda, West Omo Zone)
Gayy Primary School (Bero Woreda, West Omo Zone)
Job Summary and Key Responsibilities
The Qualitative Data Collectors will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Participate in training workshops on data collection tools, procedures, and ethical standards.
- Obtain informed consent from all selected participants prior to data collection.
- Conduct in-depth interviews (IDIs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) in a professional and culturally sensitive manner.
- Accurately audio-record interviews and take clear, detailed notes during data collection.
- Complete structured checklists and comprehensive field notes.
- Ensure completeness, accuracy, quality, and confidentiality of all collected data.
- Provide daily progress reports and promptly communicate any challenges encountered in the field.
- Work closely with the BIRD Lab School of Public Health project team to ensure smooth and successful implementation of data collection activities.
- Transcribe and translate audio interview files accurately and submit all deliverables within the agreed timelines.
- Adhere strictly to all ethical standards, study protocols, and project guidelines.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to take on additional tasks as needed to support the successful completion of the study.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Education, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of two years of experience in qualitative data collection.
- Demonstrated experience conducting IDIs and KIIs in diverse community settings.
- Proven skills in transcription and translation of qualitative interview data.
- Strong understanding of ethical research practices and participant protection.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Strong probing, interviewing, and note-taking skills.
- Good organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
